Congrats and Thank You!
This afternoon, the DC Board of Elections conducted a recount in the race for ANC 3/4G-05. My opponent, and now our commissioner-elect, Karrenthya Simmons, prevailed. The recount yielded no change to the final tally, 564 to 562.
I congratulated Karrenthya again on running a great race. She ran a spirited, well-organized campaign. She earned this victory through her own hustle and devotion. I told her that she has my full support and that I am happy to help if possible. I wish her nothing but success as our next advisory neighborhood commissioner.
The enthusiasm for my campaign really sustained me. Thank you to all my supporters! I also want to thank this entire community for the interest I received in my candidacy. I had several thoughtful conversations with neighbors I know supported my opponent, and without exception they were cordial, even encouraging. I found that touching and consistent with the spirit of a nonpartisan, advisory role—and certainly it was consistent with the sense of community here that inspired me to run in the first place. I hope that community spirit persists as the incoming commission begins its work.
I would also like to thank the DC Board of Elections and staff for their dedication and professionalism throughout the entire process (including today’s recount).
Mine was always an independent candidacy based on my desire to serve our community. It began on June 10 when Commissioner Peter Lynch noted in his regular newsletter that he would not seek re-election. He said: “We need people to step up.” And a light turned on for me. I have always been public service-minded. While the ANC role would have been an honor to hold, I look forward to finding new ways to contribute. I was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of DC Vote and intend to continue my work on behalf of DC Statehood.
I’m proud of the race I ran. I learned a lot. I have no regrets because I met so many neighbors I surely would not have met otherwise. I look forward to maintaining those connections.
For my family and friends—my “kitchen cabinet” and loudest cheerleaders—thank you for your grace and devotion (read: putting up with me).
I will keep my campaign email address active for a few months but can be better reached at: merooney@gmail.com.
Thank you!
